Tips

  • Make sure you work on a clean, dry, grease and dust-free surface.
  • Thoroughly stir all paints, pastes and gels before use.
  • Mix your own shades. All satin matt Acryl Color colours can be mixed together. Colours can be lightened with white and darkened with black.
  • All white acrylic pastes as well as the colourless gels can be overpainted with acrylic paints and mixed with up to 20% paint.
  • If you only want to use part of a stencil or 3D stencil, simply cover the rest of the motif with masking tape.
  • Apply crystal clear Acryl Gel as a finish to your acrylic paintings. Give your pictures a more lively appearance with a glossy relief effect applied with either a broad brush or a palette knife. In mixed media it holds different materials together and acts as a protective varnish.
  • Clean painting tools immediately in water after use.

How it is done:

    MASKING

With masking tape mask out selected areas, e.g. stripes. Smoothly roll some paint onto a paint roller from a paper plate. Do not take up too much paint, so that it does not seep under the tape. Continue as you like. Remove the masking tape immediately, to avoid ragged edges to the paint application and to achieve a clean outline.

Tip: Press the edges of the masking tape particularly carefully.
  • STENCILLING & SILHOUETTE STENCILLING

In order to get really sharp outlines, spray the stencil or silhouette stencil with Marabu Stencil Fixing Spray or Fix-it and leave for 3 mins to air dry. Cover the stencil with kitchen paper and press all over with your fingers to make sure that even the small motifs are fixed completely flat. Take up some paint with either a paint roller or a stencil brush and roll or dab briefly onto scrap paper, to avoid excess paint running under the stencil. Then roll or dab the paint over the motif. Carefully lift off the stencil as the paint is still wet.

Tip: With Silhouette-Stencils the motif appears in the background colour.
  • RELIEF STENCILLING

Spray the stencil with Marabu Stencil Fixing Spray or Fix-it leave for 3 mins to air dry and put in place. Pick up some paint with the back of a palette knife and spread over the motif in an even layer. Carefully lift off the stencil and clean.

Tip: stick down the edges of the stencil, to avoid getting paint under
    the motif.
  • STAMPING

Roll some paint evenly on to a paper plate and pick up on a stamp. Alternatively carefully apply paint to the motif-side of the stamp with a paint roller. Make sure that the paint does not get in the spaces between
motifs. Press the stamp firmly on to the substrate, so the stamp does not tilt. Lift the stamp straight up, repeat the stamping or apply new paint. After use clean the stamp thoroughly.

Tip: For a sharp appearance, reapply paint after each imprint. If you want an aged look, only reapply paint after stamping several times.
  • FREEHAND WITH BRUSH OR SPATULA

Freely apply paint, paste, gel or thickened acrylic paint to the substrate. You can mix colours by using two shades next to one another and blending with a soft brush such as Marabu Decoration & Hobby or Marabu Fino in the wet paint. Create relief or snow effects with a firm brush such as Marabu Forte or Robust or a palette knife.

Tip: You can add glitter to wet paint. Sand, shells, paper and other materials work extremely well in pastes and gels.
