From a chest of drawers to a vintage treasure chest

Have you been saving grandma’s chest of drawers from being taken to the tip? Great, because with a little DIY skill and Marabu Chalky-Chic the old furniture can be transformed into a highlight for your home. Nothing suitable hidden away in your loft? Of course you can also achieve this look with a new chest of drawers. Sanding away the top paint coat gives the furniture the look and feel of an object that has acquired an antique character and a mysterious past through decades of use.

Tip

  • If you use only one paint coat, the colour of the surface (e.g. wood) will show through after sanding.

How it is done:

  • Remove the drawers from the unit, take off the doors and handles and sand off the old paint if necessary. Prepare the surfaces of the unit – for an ideal result it should be free from grease and dust. Paint the surfaces with the first shade Antique Violet or Grey Blue all over with a brush or roller. Leave to dry for approx. 30 min.
  • Apply the transparent Chalky Chic Protective Wax to the areas for sanding. This protects the first paint coat and makes sanding easier afterwards. Evenly apply the second shade Pastel Yellow over the first paint coat. Again leave to dry for approx. 30 minutes or use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
  • Now you can sand the desired areas, corners and edges with sand paper until the first shade shows through again. Keep sanding until the desired used effect has been achieved.
