Serviette Technique
Cut out your required motif. Prime an earthenware pot with Marabu Decormatt and Marabu Serviette varnish & glue, put this motif onto the pot, then re-apply the paint - your masterpiece is now finished! We will show you how easy it is to use this découpage technique.
In addition to this, Marabu offers three special, water-based media so that new, fascinating ideas can be converted into reality:
crackle medium for the crackling technique, textile medium for fabrics and porcelain medium for decorative objects made of porcelain, ceramic and glass. Further instructions can be found on the product page for Marabu Serviette varnish & glue.
You need:
Serviettes of your choice, Marabu Decormatt Acryl or Decorlack Acryl, Marabu Serviette varnish & glue, matt or gloss, a soft bristle brush, a cup filled with water, a pair of scissors, any objects made of wood, papier-mâché, polystyrene, terracotta, glass, plastics, modelling pastes, stone etc.
This is how it's done:
1. Prime the object you would like to decorate with a Marabu Decormatt Acryl or Decorlack Acryl colour shade that matches the serviette motif.
2. When you have cut out the serviette motif, remove the first, printed coat carefully and put it on the object you are decorating. Always ensure the primer is totally dry first.
3. Now cover the whole motif together with the background with Marabu Serviette varnish & glue. Always paint from the middle of the motif to the rim. Allow to dry - finished!Crackle Technique
Make do and mend: Your freshly designed masterpieces are turned into antique objects through crackling (crackle technique). Ideas for use: on finished fun & fancy pictures or on antique looking objects using the serviette technique.Crackling using the serviette technique
Beautiful crackles can be achieved using Marabu crackle medium, clear.
Instructions:
1. Prime with Marabu Decormatt or Decorlack; dry with a hair dryer.
2. Apply the medium evenly; dry with a hair dryer.
3. Apply Decormatt or Decorlack very quickly; the crackle effect will occur immediately. Allow to dry for at least 1 hour.
4. Continue with the serviette technique.
Hints & Tips:
- The thicker the uppermost layer, the more distinctive the crackles will be; for fine crackles the paint has to be applied in thin layers.
- The character of the crackle effect can be influenced by the direction the uppermost layer of the paint is spread: straight spreading in one direction results in vertical or horizontal crackles; a cloud-like effect is achieved by circular paint applications. Simply experiment!
- If the crackles appear too large, the crackle medium and the corresponding paint colour can be re-applied. The crackles should be much finer.
- Crackle effect can be obtained without a primer: simply start with the crackle medium...
- Only apply the uppermost layer of paint once - painting over this while it is still wet will destroy the crackle effect.
Looking for designs
Dried flowers and leaves, newspaper clippings, thin gift wrapping paper or colour photocopies also look very nice for decoupage using the decoupage varnishes and glues. Even thin silk and fabric sections can easily be used.Applying the napkin with the textile medium
The napkin has to fully adhere to the fabric. Use the brush to remove any air bubbles. Apply medium to the edges of the napkin very thoroughly.Influencing the crackle character
When working with the Marabu Crackle Medium, the character of the crackle effect can be influenced by the application direction of the top layer of paint. Vertical brush strokes produce more vertical and horizontal cracks; circular brush strokes result in cloud-like effects. Just try it!Decorative clay pot figures
The Marabu range provides the ideal partners for painting, embellishing and varnishing your clay pot figures: Decormatt Acryl, Decorlack Acryl and the Glitter and Pluster Pen. Serviette technique is also highly suitable for creating stunning designs on clay pots!A note on painting the fabric
Do not use cardboard underneath the fabric when applying the textile paint as it could cause discolourations. Remove the dried fabric from the surface very carefully.Wrinkles are a thing of the past
Do you enjoy designing large, flat objects such as trays with serviette technique? The iron-on technique with Marabu Serviette Varnish allows you to easily apply your serviette section without wrinkles. Our iron-on technique instructions show how simple this is.Thickness of the paint coat
Only apply the top paint coat once – painting over the still wet colour would destroy the crackle effect.Fixing
The textile medium is fixed by ironing according to the instructions – oven or microwave fixing is not possible.Ironing
The serviette applied with the Textile Medium will be smooth again after fixing with an iron.No residue
Marabu Textil Medium leaves no visible edges on the fabric.Correcting oversized cracks
If any cracks are too big, they can be treated with another layer of Crackle Medium and the respective paint to achieve smaller cracks.Corrections
Any serviette edges that have come loose can be reattached with the Textil Medium.Crackle effect without base coat
Cracks can be achieved on serviette technique even without a base coat: Simply start with the Crackle Medium...Varnishing your serviette design
Do not paint over the freshly placed design with the Serviette Varnishes & Glues too often as they might tear. The designs can be moved or removed while still wet. Once dried there is only one option: Apply another base coat and place a new design on top!Marking tool
When working with the Porcelain Medium, we recommend using a phantom marker for marking the size of the design on the material.Milky?
All varnishes appear milky in the jar and after application. The desired effect will appear after drying, though – transparent glossy, matt or satin-finish.Top paint layer
All colours from the Decormatt Acryl and Decorlack Acryl range can be used as the top layer for "crackling", except metallic and mother-of-pearl colours.Caring for your textiles painted with Textil Medium
Only use gentle detergents for washing (gentle hand wash) painted textiles; wash and iron inside out. Do not rub, wring or spin. Repeated washing can result in colour rubbing off the edges (stonewash effect).Cleaning decorative objects designed with Porcelain Medium
If required, gently wipe the objects with a damp cloth. Especially the edges of the serviettes can come off with repeated washing.Fine to large cracks in the Crackle Medium
The thicker the top coat, the larger the cracks. Apply a thin coat of paint to achieve fine cracks.Serviette quality
Depending on the quality of the serviettes, the colour could rub off when painting the designs with the Serviette Varnish & Glue or other media. In this case the brush should be rinsed with water frequently; if necessary do a test application before starting.Drying time for decoupage objects
The more absorbent the material and the more coats of varnish you apply, the longer the final drying time of the finished object.Variety of suitable fabrics
The Marabu Textil Medium is ideal for serviette technique on linen, cotton and mixed fabrics with up to 20% man-made fibres. Remove any residue from finishes and fabric conditioners through washing.White and very light serviette designs
White and very light serviette designs may yellow a little when firing the Porcelain Medium.Additional protection for your serviette technique creations
If you have objects that are intended for outdoor use, give them an extra coat of varnish with the Serviette Varnish & Glue or the aqua Varnish after drying.Serviette technique with 3D effect
The Pluster Pen is a true all-round talent and can also be used for serviette technique: Enhance the three-dimensional effect of a serviette technique design by using the puff-up paint for individual textured highlights!
