Acrylic scratch ‘chameleon’ with Marabu Artist Acryl and Artist Spray Paint

When using the acrylic scratch technique, the acrylic paint is roughly applied to a canvas and then covered with a layer of Artist Spray Paint. The desired image is then scratched out. This creates striking images in vibrant colour worlds. The chameleon, with its ability to change colour, is a fantastic image, which develops uniquely when using the scratching technique.

IT’S EASY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW!

  • This and other fascinating acrylic scratch art images can be found in the book ‘Acrylic Scratch Art: Dekorative Motivbilder in Acryl kratzen’ (‘Acrylic Scratch Art: Scratch Decorative Images in Acrylics’) by Martina Lammel, published by EMF-Verlag.

How it is done:

  • Use a pencil to sketch the outline of your image. Daub on the acrylic paints and spread them around the inside of the chameleon. Next, distribute the paints around the chameleon, if necessary turning the frame as you work so you can move the spatula easily.
  • The image outline will become slightly raised. This is intentional.
  • Spray green Artist Spray Paint over the entire area.
  • Start scratching by creating the outer contour of the chameleon. Next, scratch the eye as a spiral, then hatch the entire body as per your creative ideas. The leaves can best be drawn freehand with a flourish. Based on the outer contour, add lines here and there as desired to give the image a sense of movement.
  • Leave the picture to dry for three days.
