Acrylic Scratch ‘harbour town’ with Marabu Artist Acryl and Artist Spray Paint

When using the acrylic scratch technique, the acrylic paint is roughly applied to a canvas and then covered with a layer of Artist Spray Paint. The desired image is then scratched out. This creates striking images in vibrant colour worlds. With this work of art, it is hard to miss the resemblance to Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night.

IT’S EASY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW!

  • This and other fascinating acrylic scratch art images can be found in the book ‘Acrylic Scratch Art: Dekorative Motivbilder in Acryl kratzen’ (‘Acrylic Scratch Art: Scratch Decorative Images in Acrylics’) by Martina Lammel, published by EMF-Verlag.

How it is done:

  • Create the horizon by drawing a horizontal line. Next, apply the two yellow shades of Artist Acryl primarily to the upper area followed by the remaining colours to the lower area. Quickly move everything around with a spatula to create mixed colours.
  • Now evenly spray the dark blue Artist Spray Paint over your creation while still wet, taking care not to forget the edges.
  • Start scratching by creating a line along the edge of the canvas and arcing it in towards the centre of the picture, ending in a spiral. Using this contour for guidance, now scratch lots of parallel lines.
  • Add more spirals in the sky and fill out the space around them with parallel lines. If there isn’t much room on the canvas, always place the scratching tool on the image and sweep the arced lines outwards over the edge with a flourish.
  • Now use a wider tool to scratch a line below the spirals. Always remove any excess paint with a cloth so as to prevent blotches.
  • Use vertical and horizontal movements to create the abstract-looking buildings. Finally, use line hatching to fill out the lower area.
  • Leave the picture to dry for three days.
