Acrylic scratch ‘koi’ with Marabu Artist Acryl and Artist Spray Paint

When using the acrylic scratch technique, the acrylic paint is roughly applied to a canvas and then covered with a layer of Artist Spray Paint. The desired image is then scratched out. This creates striking images in vibrant colour worlds. The dynamic appearance of aquatic waves is a well-suited design feature. The stark contrast between blue and white highlights the illusion of reflections in the sunlight.

IT’S EASY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW!

  • This and other fascinating acrylic scratch art images can be found in the book ‘Acrylic Scratch Art: Dekorative Motivbilder in Acryl kratzen’ (‘Acrylic Scratch Art: Scratch Decorative Images in Acrylics’) by Martina Lammel, published by EMF-Verlag.

How it is done:

  • Use a pencil to sketch the outline of your image onto the canvas. Roughly apply all the Artist Acryl colours to the canvas and use your tool to swipe them around. Use a new wooden spatula to create the koi.
  • Quickly apply the white Artist Spray Paint to create an opaque layer, spraying the entire area twice. In doing so, move the can from all directions to ensure that you fully cover the raised structures. Take care to avoid creating little puddles by spraying from a distance of 20 cm.
  • Start scratching by creating the image of the koi. First, working freehand, draw the entire outer contour of the body and the fins with a single line. You can then simply add the sweeping lines inside the image as you desire.
  • To create a vibrant structure for the water, now create the water lines based on the shape of the fish. Finally, you can use the side of the wooden spatula to clear a few areas around the edges of the image to create colour-intensive contrasts. In doing so, take care to always push the paint outwards towards the edge of the canvas to prevent excess paint from dripping on the finished picture.
  • Leave the picture to dry for three days.
