Wooden clothes pegs
2 pieces of roof batten (the same length as the bag)
String

How it is done:

  • #1 Make your own fabric bag!

Make a 45 x 40 cm paper template. Cut two pieces of fabric that are exactly the same size, making sure to leave a 1 cm seam allowance along each edge. Using the rest of the fabric, cut out two 7 x 75 cm strips (with a 1 cm seam allowance). These will be the handles.
  • Place the right sides of the larger fabric pieces together and sew along both sides and the bottom edge using a seam width of 1 cm.
  • Turn the bag section inside out. Fold the handle strips lengthways, line up the edges and make sure the right side is inside the fold. Sew along the long edge using a width of 1 cm and secure the start and end of the seam.
  • Temporarily sew one narrow side of each handle closed (using large stitches) so that it will be easier to reverse the fabric.
  • Take the side that is sewed shut and use the yardstick to push the fabric through to the other side. Open the temporary seam and iron both handles so that the seam is in the middle.
  • Place the handles so that the narrow section is situated on the top edge of the bag (on the outside). Measure 10 cm in from each side of the bag and pin down the handles on the front and the back. Sew the handles in place on both sides, making sure to secure the stitching at the beginning and end of the seam.
  • Iron the top of the bag about 2 cm in and sew another seam around the top edge. Secure the stitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Your bag is now ready for Shibori!
  • #2 Dye your bag

Fold and iron the bag lengthways until you get a concertina shape.
  • Take the clothes pegs and place them on the edge of the fabric on both sides so that they are the same distance apart.
  • Place a batten beneath and on top of the pegs and tie the laths around the pegs using the string. Tie a knot in the string.
  • Prepare the dip according to the package instructions and leave the bag in the mix for roughly 30 mins, making sure to stir intermittently.
  • Rinse the bag thoroughly under clean, cold water before removing the string, the battens and the pegs. You should now be able to see the eye-catching pattern.
