Venetian masks with Marabu GREEN alkyd paint

Venetian masks are very easy to make – from empty drinks cartons. Not only is this a great eco-friendly upcycling project, but the masks can be uniquely and artistically designed. Perfect for any fancy dress ball, carnival, costume party,…

How it is done:

  • Cut off the top part of the beverage carton with the seal, then cut it open lengthwise and remove the base. If necessary, wipe off any liquid residue with a cloth to ensure the carton is dry. Then carefully peel off the top printed layer of the beverage carton. This will reveal a layer of cardboard that is perfect for painting and designing.
  • Print out the template for the carnival mask and use a pencil to trace the outline onto the carton. For children's masks, simply reduce the print size when printing. Cut out the masks, including the holes for the eyes. You can make about 2 masks from one juice box.
  • Use a hole punch or pliers to make holes where you have marked on the template, where the elastic will be attached.
  • Prime the masks with GREEN alkyd paint using a wide brush and allow to dry thoroughly.
  • Then use a finer brush from the GREEN brush set to add various details to the masks, such as borders, dots, drops, leaf tendrils and more. Again, allow the paint to dry well.
  • Cut a length of elastic per mask that extends slightly further than from temple to temple (along the back of the head). Knot the elastic into the holes on either side. The masks are now ready to wear!
